New hydrophilic carbon molecular sieve membranes for bioethanol dehydration via pervaporation

Tubular supported carbon molecular sieve membranes (CMSMs) with high hydrophilicity and perm-selectivities for water suitable ethanol dehydration were developed from a Novolac oligomer phenolic resin as precursor. Alpha alumina CMSMs resulted in 1.69 times higher surface roughness than zirconia supports. The 48% selective layer thickness. According to pervaporation results, permeance decreased by the increase thickness mole based selectivity of water- was enhanced. 3982 g/mol weight enabled membrane reach one-layer coating. Performance are compared literature data terms mole-based vs. permeance. could be potential substitution traditional methods offering performance result reducing final price bioethanol used sustainable energy source.
